SECTION WIDTH || PROS AND CONS OF WIDER TYRES...

Wideness of a tyre refers to it's section width. The side of a tyre that comes in contact with the road surfaces. Talking about wider tyres is relative.
Every vehicle comes with specifications for its tyre sizes also refers to as stock tyres. When a vehicle owner aims at replacing a stock tyre with a section width beyond the manufacturer's specifications he/she is aiming at wider tyres.

Section widths are measured in millimetres. Moving a stock tyre from 195/65R15 (the first three digits: 195 represent the section width of the tyre) to 205/65R15 means 10 millimeters increase in space the tyre occupies on the road.

Replacing 225/65R17 with 245/65R17 meaning the new tyre is 20 millimeters wider. Technically speaking, the contact patch of the tyre has increased. This has both advantages and disadvantages.

ADVANTAGES OF WIDER TYRES
  1. STABILITY : Because of its wider scope of contact patch, wider tyres are stable when speeding. They can cope with high speeds without skidding off the road.
  2. HIGH GRIP RATE: Wider tyres perform better than the narrow tyres on dry surfaces and have more reduced stopping distance than narrow tyres when brake is applied.
  3. PROVIDE EXCELLENT HANDLINGS: Most wide tyres come with low profile ratio which helps them to deliver excellently when cornering and accelerating.

DISADVANTAGES OF WIDER TYRES
  1. POOR PERFORMANCE ON SOME ROAD SURFACES: Wider tyres perform poorly on Some road surfaces like snow. Narrow tyres can cut through snow easily and gain traction. It is important to take note of the type of tyres you have installed on your vehicle on any given road surfaces you are driving on.
  2. REDUCES TURNING RADIUS: Switching to wider tyres can impact how far you can turn your steering wheel. We recommend consulting with experts before making a switch from narrow to wider tyres. What you should understand is anytime you replace your tyre with anything outside the manufacturer's specifications you compromise some features of the car mainly its performance.
  3. WIDER TYRES ARE MORE SUSCEPTIBLE TO ROAD HAZARD THAN NARROW TYRES: Wider tyres tend to suffer road hazard and irregularities more because of their scope of contact patch. It's always easier to escape running into potholes or running over an object on the road with narrow tyres than their wider  counterparts.
