How do reduce how much you spend on tyres? Taking proper care of your tyre treads is one of the ways to reduce frequent replacement of your tyres.
Treads create friction between the road and your tyres which reduce the tread lifespan.
The quality of traction and performance of a tyre come from the quality of its treads.
How long your tyre treads will last depends on many factors.
New premium tyres are expected to last for about 20,000 miles. Factors that impact tyre treads are many, some are easy to detect some are not.
Other benefits of taking care of your tyre treads include: fuel efficiency, good performance and safety.
Ready to learn how to take proper care of your tyre treads?
Ok, Let's go...
- STOP OVERLOADING YOUR VEHICLE.

Every tyre has service description that shows its maximum load capacity and speed limitations. Overloading reduces the lifespan of your tyre treads.
Know your tyre's service description and stay within its limit will preserve your treads and safe you from experiencing other tyre failures like brake failure, blowout, uneven wearings etc.
Service description is found after tyre size inscriptions writing in alphanumeric codes.
2. FIX YOUR SUSPENSIONS.
Unhealthy suspension impacts your tyre treads negatively. Bad shock absorbers make your tyres vulnerable to road irregularities. Bad shock absorbers can create bulge on your treads that will make your tyres end up wobbling.
Lower arms, ball joints, leakages, shock absorbers etc are all part of your suspension. When any of these is left unattended to quickly the tyre treads suffer damages. If your tyres don't last as expected your suspension might be the reason.
Get your suspension inspected by a qualified technician as soon as possible.
3. GO FOR TYRE ROTATION.
Tyre treads don't wear at the same rates. In front wheel drive layouts, the front tyres wear out faster than the back tyres.
Rotating your tyres at about 6,000 mile will ensure even wearings of the four tyres. Rotation is the process of changing positions of tyres on a vehicle.
There are different types of rotations according to the tyre types. Directional tyres are not rotated same way like asymmetric and multidimensional tyres.
4. GO FOR ALIGNMENT AND WHEEL BALANCING.
Lack of proper alignment and balance cause tyres to wear prematurely and unevenly. Uneven wear is when one part of a tyre tread wears quicker than the other part.
In one case, the inner tread may wear quicker than the outer tread. In other case, the outer tread wears quicker.
Alignment and Wheel balancing are advised to be carried out at about 5,500 -6,000 miles to preserve your treads.
5. MAINTAIN PROPER INFLATION LEVEL.
There are two major extremes many vehicle owners are guilty of when it comes to tyre inflation. One is under inflation, the second one is over inflation. Both are responsible for tread uneven wearings and tyre damages.
Under inflation causes tyres to wear at both edges while living the center treads.
Over inflation reduces contact patch of a tyre, causing excessive wearing at the middle.
Recommended pressure inflation is found on placard stickers placed in different places in a car.
You can find it by the driver's door jam, glove box, car owners manual and some other places.
You need to know that some driving styles hurt your treads badly. Do you engage in aggressive driving? Your tyre treads are suffering for it.
When you engage in aggressive taking off, cornering and stopping, you cause deep friction that reduces the lifespan of your treads.
If you are always flooring your pedals please stop it and start being gentle and engage your pedals in a more friendly manner.
The lower your treads go, the more rolling resistance and fuel consumption increase.

Coming out Soon.... |
It's so easy to forget that tyres are just rubbers. Speeds cause tyres to heat up quickly and start affecting the part of it that come in contact with the road.
Service descriptions of a tyre include speed rating and load index (as explained above). Every tyre has its speed and load limitations which are placed just after tyre sizes on the sidewalls.
8. USE THE RIGHT TYRES FOR YOU.
Tyre market is filled with tyres that are designed to meet different needs and applications. Using wrong tyres will impact on tyre tread wear rates. If your vehicle is used for logistics and carrying loads often you need a LT (Light Truck) or C (Commercial) tyres.
If you drive on gravel, muddy, sandy, etc, all those not so smooth roads. You need an Off Road tyres.
Different tyres are made with different rubber compounds to deliver special assignments.
Get the right tyre suitable for you. Don't use Winter tyres in Summer. Except you go for all Seasons tyres.
9. CHANGE YOUR ROUTE.
Constant driving on bad roads is one of the reasons yours treads wear prematurely. If possible, change your route to a more smooth roads to preserve your treads.
Change your route or change to tyres that are suitable for your environment. Wrong tyres on wrong road surfaces damage treads quickly.
Tread chunking is caused by regular driving on off-road, unpaved or gravels. Use alternative routes if possible to safe your tyres.
10. WATCH OUT FOR ROAD DEBRIS.
Watch for following road hazards when you drive:
Obstacles,
Sharp objects,
Speed bumps,
Curbs.
These are easy to spot when you are driving during a fair weather but during or after rain, flood can easily hide sharp object that can puncture and damage your treads.
In a situation where you must run over road obstacles, curbs or speed bumps, they must be approached slowly and carefully.
Bad treads have negative implications both economic and safety wise so pay attention to them.
